This article is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of May 2025.

Second Nature exists because we fundamentally disagree with Weight Watchers (WW) and Slimming World’s approach to weight loss.

Research published in clinical journals shows that restrictive approaches like points systems and food labelling create the psychological conditions for yo-yo dieting and weight regain.

A BBC Radio 4 investigation documented serious concerns from leading eating disorder specialists about commercial diet programmes, with experts describing approaches like Slimming World’s as potentially harmful to mental health.

Unlike programmes that focus on what to restrict, Second Nature addresses why people struggle with sustainable weight loss.

Our NHS-backed approach, published in the BMJ, shows that people maintain an average 6.2kg weight loss at 12 months.

This comparison examines the clinical evidence, psychological impact, and long-term outcomes of each approach to help you make an informed decision about your weight loss journey.

Clinical evidence

The most significant difference between these programmes lies in their clinical validation and long-term outcomes.

Second Nature’s NHS partnership

Second Nature has been working with the NHS since 2017. Our outcomes, published in the BMJ, show participants maintain an average 6.2kg weight loss at 12 months.

Additionally, 40% of type 2 diabetes participants reduced their HbA1c below diagnostic thresholds, demonstrating metabolic improvements beyond weight loss.

Weight Watchers evidence

While WW cites internal studies, independent research on commercial diet programmes shows that restrictive point systems often lead to weight cycling and psychological stress around food choices.

NHS referral concerns

The BBC investigation found that 23% of English councils refer patients to Slimming World, making it the largest single provider of NHS-funded weight loss services. However, screening for eating disorders is inconsistent:

  • Only 2 out of 73 referral forms specifically mention binge eating
  • Nearly half of forms include no eating disorder screening
  • Beat charity reports that 23% of people seeking help for binge eating disorder had been recommended diet plans

NICE guidelines state that weight-loss programmes are not recommended for binge eating disorder and can actually be harmful.

These guidelines are why Second Nature has a strict screen process during our onboarding, along with safeguarding procedures overseen by our in-house team of dietitians and psychologists to delicately remove clients from our programme if we suspect they have an eating disorder.

Evidence type WW Slimming World Second Nature
Peer-reviewed studies Limited independent research No published outcomes BMJ publication

Long-term maintenance High regain rates reported Limited data available 6.2kg maintained at 12 months

Pricing

When comparing costs, it’s essential to consider what’s included and the long-term value based on success rates.

Programme WW Digital Slimming World Second Nature Value Analysis
Monthly cost £10-£19 £20-£24
(meetings + digital)
£28-£39
(non-medication programme)

Sustained weight loss at 12 months Low success rate Limited data Average 6.5kg loss Cost per successful outcome
NHS clinical backing Peace of mind

Cost per successful outcome analysis: While Second Nature has higher upfront costs, our success rate for sustained weight loss makes it more cost-effective than repeatedly joining programmes that don’t deliver long-term results.

Psychological approach

The psychological framework of each programme significantly impacts long-term success and relationship with food.

Why points and syns create problems

Research in eating behaviour demonstrates that labelling foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ (through points or syns) creates psychological restriction that often leads to:

  • Obsessive thinking about forbidden foods
  • Binge eating when ‘rules’ are broken
  • Guilt and shame around food choices
  • All-or-nothing mentality

The restriction-binge cycle

Clinical psychology research shows that dietary restraint paradoxically increases the likelihood of overeating. This explains why many people experience the yo-yo cycle with traditional diet programmes.

Psychological factor WW Slimming World Second Nature
Food categorisation Points = moral value Syns = guilt-inducing No foods forbidden
Behavioural focus External control (points) Rule-based eating Internal awareness
Long-term mindset Dependency on system Fear of ‘syns’ Autonomous healthy choices

Second Nature’s psychology-first approach

Our programme is built on behavioural science research showing that sustainable change comes from:

  • Understanding emotional triggers for eating
  • Building intrinsic motivation rather than external rules
  • Creating positive associations with healthy foods
  • Developing self-compassion around slip-ups

Support quality

The qualifications and training of support staff significantly impact programme effectiveness and safety.

Why professional qualifications matter: Registered dietitians undergo 4+ years of university training in nutrition science, psychology, and clinical practice. They can safely support people with medical conditions and provide evidence-based advice rather than following a script.

Eating disorder risks and safeguarding

A critical difference between these programmes lies in their approach to eating disorder prevention and detection.

Documented eating disorder concerns

The BBC Radio 4 investigation “Slimming Groups and Eating Disorders” documented multiple cases of people developing eating disorders after joining commercial diet programmes. Common patterns included:

  • Extreme behaviours to meet weekly weigh-in targets
  • Laxative abuse before weigh-ins
  • Skipping meals and avoiding water before sessions
  • Development of binge eating patterns
  • Hospitalisation for severe eating disorders

Expert medical consensus

Leading eating disorder specialists expressed serious concerns:

Professor Chris Fairburn (Oxford University): “So, you are actually training people to do something that is likely to create an eating disorder.”

Dr Omara Naseem (Clinical Psychologist): “Someone who’s got a restrictive eating pattern shouldn’t be going to these groups. Absolutely not. It will lead to a relapse.”

Safeguarding approach WW Slimming World Second Nature
Eating disorder screening Basic self-reporting Inconsistent screening Clinical assessment by qualified professionals
Ongoing monitoring
Regular dietitian check-ins
Professional oversight
NHS-trained clinicians
Approach to rapid weight loss Often celebrated Rewarded with certificates Medically supervised for safety. Dietitian’s will intervene if weight loss is beyond a sustainable level of 1-2lbs a week.

Second Nature’s clinical safeguards

Our NHS-backed approach includes multiple safeguards absent from commercial diet programmes:

  • Professional screening: All participants assessed by qualified health professionals
  • Ongoing clinical oversight: Regular monitoring by registered dietitians trained to identify eating disorder symptoms
  • Psychology-first approach: Focus on understanding eating behaviours rather than restricting foods
  • No food labelling: We never categorise foods as ‘good,’ ‘bad,’ or assign moral values
  • Sustainable targets: Weight loss goals based on medical evidence, not arbitrary weekly targets

Long-term outcomes

The ultimate test of any weight loss programme is whether people maintain their results long-term.

Weight maintenance statistics

Our BMJ-published research shows:

  • 90% of Second Nature participants maintain weight loss at 12 months
  • Average maintained weight loss: 6.2kg

In contrast, reviews of commercial diet programmes show that most participants regain ~80% of lost weight within 2-5 years.

Why Second Nature achieves better long-term results

Our approach focuses on the psychological and behavioural factors that drive sustainable change:

  • Habit formation: We build automatic healthy behaviours rather than relying on willpower
  • Flexible mindset: No forbidden foods means no guilt-driven binges
  • Stress management: Addressing emotional eating at its root
  • Gradual progression: Sustainable changes that become second nature

Member experiences

Here’s what people who have tried all three programmes report:

Sarah, 42, tried WW for 2 years, Slimming World for 18 months, now on Second Nature:

“With Weight Watchers, I became obsessed with points. I’d save them up for wine but then feel guilty. Slimming World was confusing – calling chocolate ‘syns’ made me feel like I was doing something wrong just for enjoying a treat.”

“Second Nature taught me why I was comfort eating after stressful days. Now I make healthy choices naturally, without counting anything. I’ve maintained a 2 stone loss for over a year.”

Mark, 38, former Slimming World member:

“The group meetings felt shame-based when you hadn’t lost weight. With Second Nature, my dietitian helped me understand my emotional eating patterns. I’ve learned skills I’ll use for life, not just while I’m paying for a programme.”

Take home message

The fundamental difference between Second Nature and traditional diet programmes lies in our evidence-based, psychology-first approach that prioritises safety and long-term mental health:

  • Clinical validation: Our NHS partnership and BMJ publication demonstrate real-world effectiveness
  • Psychological safety: We avoid food labelling and restriction-based approaches that experts warn can trigger eating disorders
  • Professional oversight: Registered dietitians provide qualified, ongoing clinical supervision
  • Long-term success: 90% maintain weight loss at 12 months vs. high regain rates with traditional diets
  • Comprehensive approach: We address stress, sleep, and emotional eating alongside nutrition
  • Evidence-based safety: Unlike programmes investigated by the BBC for potential eating disorder risks, our approach is designed with psychological safety as a priority

Choose Weight Watchers if: You prefer structure and don’t mind ongoing tracking, and have no history of eating disorders or food-related anxiety.

Choose Slimming World if: You thrive in group settings despite expert warnings about food labelling approaches, and have no eating disorder risk factors.

Choose Second Nature if: You want evidence-based, psychologically safe weight loss supported by NHS-validated outcomes and qualified professionals who understand the importance of sustainable behaviour change without food restriction or moral labelling.

Second Nature’s weight-loss programme

Second Nature combines evidence-based nutrition with behavioural psychology to help you lose weight and keep it off long-term.

Our approach has been validated by the NHS and published in the BMJ, showing that we’re the most trusted weight-loss programme in the UK.

Why should you choose Second Nature over other providers?

For peace of mind.

Second Nature has worked with the NHS for over 6 years, providing weight-loss programmes across the UK. Our programmes focus on scientific evidence, patient safety, and sustainable outcomes.

We hope that our track record of effective, evidence-based weight-loss results will give you peace of mind to give us a try.

I totally agree with article. I use weight watchers and slimming world in the past and I lost weight but never kept it but instead I put more weight back on in a very short time. When I got referred by my GP to second nature, I really thought it would be the same process but I gave it a try as I was border line diabetic and also weighting to have a complete knee replacement and I had to loose weight. Well I was so suprised of the program, the support from professional dieticians and nutritionist and support for the group that I have learnt so much about nutrition , Excercise and about myself that I feel inlove with the program. I can say hands down that this is the best program that I ever joined that opened my way of dealing with food and active life as well as my mental side of it. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who would want to change their life for the better. I have learned to cook healthy all the time and shop mindfully. The recipes were all easy and delicious. I know cook my own healthy recipe. I can say I have turned my life around and enjoying food again as I have a better understanding and relationship with it. I have lost to my target weight and intending to continue for life on this journey that brought me what was missing and making me the way I was. I would like to thank the founder of this program as they have thought of everything. I am so greatful that my GP has referred me to this program.

You should as your gp to refer you directly and they will contact you. Hope you can get in if not you can still be a member by joining I think it is worth the money as you will be well looked after and have professional help.

Morning!
I’m thinking of joining the trial as I’m having hormonal issues and have put on a stone recently which I can’t seem to control and it’s getting me down. I’m losing confidence in the way I look too.
I work out a lot so my metabolism is/was high so I volume eat. I’m worried incase I’m going to be continuously hungry and I also enjoy a protein bar a day as a treat!! Am I still able to incorporate this??
Look forward to hearing from you
Thanks
Nicky 😊

19 July, 2024

Hi Nicky
I have joined the second natur program and I can tell you that I also have hormones imbalance that is why it is harder for us women to loose weight and maintaining it. Let me say that the program is an excellent program and you will learn to have a better relationship with food and you will learn the difference between certain food and how to put it together. All the recipes in the program are easy to make but so delicious. At first like everything it will take time to prepare but you will learn to batch cook your favourite and store it so it does not take times all the time. Hope this will help to make your decision.

Hi. I would really like to try Second Nature to lose weight and lower my cholesterol and blood pressure. I have been a sw member for years but am heavier than I have ever been. I now don’t have such a healthy relationship with food. Being an ibs sufferer along with reflux I need a plan that suits me. Could this be the one?

Anna

4 January, 2023

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for your comment!

The best way to improve your cholesterol levels in addition to your current treatment is to follow a healthy balanced diet and exercise regularly. The Second Nature programme will help you do both of these things, as well as improve your sleep and reduce your stress.

Our nutrition recommendations encourage eating a wide variety of whole foods (protein, dairy, wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, and healthy fats) and reducing processed foods. We know processed foods tend to contain high amounts of added sugar, refined carbohydrates, and trans fats – all of which will have the biggest impact on your cholesterol levels. While we provide advice for improving your lifestyle, it’s important first and foremost to follow any recommendations from your medical team.

The programme also incorporates aspects of health that will help to improve high blood pressure, including exercise, sleep, and mindfulness. As always, we recommend you continue to manage your condition with your GP alongside the Second Nature programme.

Many people with IBS can follow our programme, but it’s worth noting that our health coaches are unable to provide medical advice and we would always advise that you follow your doctor’s advice. Our health coaches can help you to tweak our recipes to suit your needs, keep a food and symptom journal, spread meals across the day and eat mindfully.

If you’d like more information, please feel free to contact us at support@secondnature.io 🙂

8 July, 2022

Hi Sheila,

Thanks for your comment and interest in our programme! You can cancel your subscription at any time. You’ll choose what you’d like to pay for your first two weeks (your trial) and choose your subscription option that starts from Monday of week 3 if you choose to continue past your trial. You can cancel at any point by emailing support@secondnature.io to stop your next payment.

We provide broad guidelines that can be easily adapted to suit your personal preferences and most dietary requirements. During the programme, your health coach, who’ll be a registered dietitian or nutritionist, can help you make substitutions for foods to suit your needs.

When you sign up to the programme, you’ll have access to hundreds of recipes through the Second Nature app. We also have a specific recipe category for vegan and vegetarian meals, including recipes like:

Smashed chickpea cups
Tomato soup
Chana masala
Mediterranean quinoa
Moroccan vegetarian pumpkin stew
Coconut dahl
Beetroot hummus

We provide a broad list of ‘foods to choose’, which can be adapted to exclude any particular foods you either dislike or can’t eat.

If you know what foods tend to cause you symptoms, your health coach can help you to come up with alternatives, however, they won’t be able to provide you with medical advice or help you determine what foods cause your symptoms.

If you’d like to register for our programme, you can click here. Please don’t hesitate to email support@secondnature.io with any questions, we’ll be happy to help 🙂

Deborah Edwards

14 October, 2021

I am a Type 1 diabetic, have an under-active thyroid and lipoedema, I also have scoliosis of the spine and a huge umbilical hernia that I acquired 33 years ago when pregnant with my 2nd son. I am in constant pain and basically all the doctors I have seen say they wont touch me surgically until I lose a huge amount of weight. My GP put me on orlistat but I have taken myself off of it as getting the prescriptions has proved difficult and I also spent a lot of time on the toilet! I have to admit my weight problem has been going on for years and I am quite impatient if I don’t see results quite quickly and regularly is there any hope for me?

Anna

26 October, 2021

Hi Deborah,

Thanks for your comment and so sorry to hear about the pain you’re managing on a daily basis.

Our programme will help you to develop healthy habits that can be sustained for life. We don’t work for quick, drastic changes as we find these often can’t be preserved over the long-term. Our programme instead will help you to make sustainable changes in regard to nutrition, sleep, stress management, thought patterns, and habits that move you to your weight loss goal.

Whilst we recognise that it may be harder to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, our guidelines are designed to help you make sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes. By following our dietary and exercise recommendations, you’ll be supported to lose weight sustainably and improve your overall wellbeing.

People living with type 1 diabetes have successfully followed the Second Nature programme. Upon joining, you’ll take full responsibility for carbohydrate counting and relevant insulin dosing. We also recommend informing your GP, diabetes nurse, or specialised dietitian prior to signing up, and checking in with them regularly throughout the programme in case any of your medications need to be adjusted.

While we provide a brief guide on complex carbohydrates, you’ll notice that our recommendations don’t include all sources of carbohydrates. For example, we don’t count carbohydrates from dairy, fruit, or non-starchy vegetables in your recommended three servings of complex carbohydrates a day. Therefore, you’ll need to measure your own carbohydrate intake from all foods in order to correctly match your insulin dosage.

If you’d like to learn more about our programme, you can take our health quiz here, or email support@secondnature.io with any questions 🙂

Miss DIANE LOUIS

22 September, 2021

Have tried Weightwatchers many times and have lost weight, but not kept it off. I gave up on Weightwatchers when the focus shifted from purely weightloss to wellbeing and lifestyle also. I only want to be shown how to lose weight, not how to live my life. I see that Second Nature is centred around wellbeing and lifestyle also, so I am not to sanguine about its being the way forward for me, but I am willing to try it.

Anna

29 September, 2021

Hi Diane,

Thanks for your comment and interest in our programme 🙂 We’d love for you to give the programme a try!

We offer a two-week risk-free trial. If you find the programme isn’t for you during your first two weeks, you can cancel for a full refund.

We’ve had a huge number of people join the programme who’ve previously tried Weight Watchers, Slimming World, and meal replacement diets for many years. These people have reported some success with these diets while they were attending the classes or taking the shakes, but then eventually the weight came back on.

At Second Nature, we don’t believe counting calories or points, public weigh-ins, or focusing on weight alone as the only measure of health. Instead, we’ll teach you to feel in-control of your relationship with food and learn a sustainable way of making healthy changes that actually last.

Our programme also takes a holistic approach towards lifestyle change. We don’t just focus on what you eat, as we know there are so many other aspects that contribute to our overall physical and mental health. This is why we also cover topics like mindful eating, how to identify distorted thoughts, how to sleep better, and how to manage your stress levels.

However, engagement with different aspects of the programme is entirely up to you. If you’d prefer to focus more on nutrition, that’s absolutely fine.

If you’d like to learn more, you can take our health quiz here, or email support@secondnature.io with any questions 🙂

Can I please have more information about gp referral

Anna

26 August, 2021

Hi Lisa, thanks for your comment!

In certain areas of the country, you can receive a referral to our programme through the NHS which means you can partake free of charge.

We aren’t yet available across the country, so we also offer the programme to those who wish to pay for it privately.

It may be worth checking with your GP to see if they can refer you 🙂

You can take our health quiz to learn more about the programme, or email support@secondnature.io with any questions.

I couldnt answer “none” tothe 1st question (pasta, packaged bread, cereal etc) because your website wouldn’t accept it!!!

Anna

26 August, 2021

Hi Marguerite, thanks for your comment and feedback – we’ve flagged this with our team to update!

The purpose of this question is to showcase the impact of simple carbohydrates on blood sugar levels, and then to show you why our programme takes a lower carb approach to eating.

Please select any of the answers to continue through the signup flow 🙂 Once you’ve completed signup, your health coach (a registered nutritionist) will work with you to identify what foods from your diet might be currently preventing you from reaching your goals.

You can access our health quiz here. If you have any questions, please contact support@secondnature.io.

I am 70 yrs old. I would like to lose approximately 1 stone. I put weight on over lockdown. I love to cook and try new recipes. I try not to eat processed food. I do like ice cram and a gin and tonic.

Anna

26 August, 2021

Hi Anne, thanks for your comment – we’d love to help you reach your goal.

If you enjoy cooking and new recipes, you’ll enjoy our programme. We have an extensive recipe catalog, and you’ll have the opportunity to try plenty of new dishes.

Food isn’t just eaten for nutrition, but for enjoyment too! So while we recommend reducing your intake of ultra-processed foods (as it sounds like you already do), this doesn’t mean you can never enjoy these types of food again. Instead, we’ll teach you how to incorporate them into your diet in a mindful and moderate way.

Our general approach to alcohol is around moderation. It can be helpful to cut down on your alcohol intake while focusing on improving your diet and lifestyle, but it’s not necessary to completely eliminate it. Having a glass of wine with dinner or a gin and tonic at the weekend is absolutely fine.

We do generally recommend, however, having a break from alcohol in the first 5 days of the programme, which is called our ‘Reset’ period.

To learn more about our programme, you can take our health quiz here.

You’ll receive regular educational articles to help you and motivate you, taking you through different aspects of lifestyle change – including things like nutrition, sleep, exercise stress management, thought patterns, and behaviours.

Anna

14 August, 2021

Hi Sandra,

To date, we’ve helped hundreds of people living with type 2 diabetes to lose weight and improve their blood sugar control. We take a holistic approach to lifestyle change at Second Nature, all of which can have a positive impact on the management of your diabetes. Alongside providing advice on which foods to choose, we’ll also help you to increase your exercise, get a better night’s sleep, and reduce your stress levels.

Our programme is available free of charge through the NHS in certain areas of the country. We’d recommend checking with your GP to see if they’re able to refer you to our programme 🙂

Jane Shaw

9 August, 2021

I’m 62, 15ks overweight and have battled with my weight nearly all my adult life. I’ve tried EVERY diet plan ever invented with varying degrees of success/failure. Before I commit to second nature long term I’d like to try the five day trial to see if it fits.

Anna

14 August, 2021

Hi Jane, thanks for your comment! That’s entirely understandable, please email support@secondnature.io to request your free 5-day plan.

We’ve had a huge number of people join the programme who’ve previously tried Weight Watchers, Slimming World, and meal replacement diets for many years. These people have reported some success with these diets while they were attending the classes or taking the shakes, but then eventually the weight came back on.

We don’t believe counting calories or points, public weigh-ins, or focusing on weight alone as the only measure of health. Instead, we’ll teach you to feel in-control of your relationship with food and learn a sustainable way of making healthy changes that actually lasts.

To learn more about our programme, you can take our health quiz here.

I am 77 and have always struggled with my weight. I was a gold member with we for several years, but an accident and surgery, plus lockdown, has caused e to gain just over a stone. I have just signed on to slimming world for 6 weeks, but the recipes do not meet with approval by family members. I will see how it goes and may change after the 6 weeks

Anna

2 August, 2021

Hi Janet, sorry to hear what you’ve been through and hope you’re now recovered from the accident!

Our nutrition guidelines are designed to be flexible and cater to a range of dietary requirements and preferences. We provide a broad list of ‘foods to choose’, which can be adapted to exclude any particular foods that you or your family either dislike or can’t eat.

The Second Nature recipes can be enjoyed by the whole family and your health coach can help you make adjustments to the recipes in order to make them ‘family friendly’. This means you won’t need to be making separate meals for yourself and your family.  Please find a sampling of our recipes here.

I signed up and dutifully followed the plan , I enjoyed the food, however despite this over 12 weeks I only lost £12. It seemed an expensive way to lose so little and I was very disappointed . I just don’t seem to lose weight on a low carb plan , I have subsequently tried Keto, again I do not lose weight with very low carb . I am looking for a plan that is easy to fit in packed lunches for work that doesn’t take hours to prepare and fits well with a 30 min lunch break. I’m also quite a fussy eater in as much as I’m not adventurous and prefer recipes that use everyday easy to access foods. And finally, because of my weight, I have mobility issues and need more gentle exercises that I can slowly build on. Can you cover all of this in your plan.
Thank you

I am not a member of any club but what you wrote was totally narrow minded towards clubs other than second nature, just trying to promote second nature must be commission involved for you to deceive people

Sue

1 April, 2021

Weight watchers does have tracking sleep, tracking exercise, recipe videos. The WW app has all of that in. If you are a member you can access this. It also has a What’s in your fridge. So that it can suggest building a meal from your items. I’m diabetic and as a diabetic it steers you in the lower carb complex carb area. A person has choices such as on your plan. So some of those boxes ticked or crossed aren’t accurate. I don’t work for WW….disclaimer….I just believe in giving customers the truth

Liz

19 March, 2021

Hi, I have gained 3 stones during COVID and eating has become a problem for me ie binge eating, especially at night. I’m 74, will your programme help with these issues please?

Amy Groome

19 April, 2021

Hi Liz, thanks for your question! The Second Nature programme takes a holistic approach to improve your wellbeing by focusing on a range of areas including eating habits, exercise, sleep, stress, and mental wellbeing. If you’re currently suffering from a bunge eating disorder, it wouldn’t be suitable for you to follow the programme at this time. This is due to the importance of first receiving specialist clinical support, which we are unable to offer. If you haven’t already, we recommend that you seek advice from a health professional (e.g. GP, Psychologist) or B-EAT ED helpline and support (0808010677). If you’re currently seeking treatment and have discussed joining Second Nature with your health care professional, our programme can help you to adopt a healthy relationship with food, with daily support from a health coach. To find out more, please take our health quiz here

Amy Groome

19 April, 2021

Hi Jo, thanks for your question! At the moment, we partner with the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) to provide the programme across various areas of the UK. We’d recommend contacting your GP to find out whether they’re able to offer you a referral. We hope to expand to other areas soon, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the website. In the meantime, if you still wish to do the programme, you can also sign up privately, by taking our health quiz here

Hi

Due to a medical condition I need to incorporate rolled oats and ground flaxseeds in my diet every day, plus high fibre foods and fruits.
How does this fit in with your low carb regime please?

Amy Groome

9 February, 2021

Hi Carleen, thanks for your question! Our nutrition recommendations are designed to be flexible to suit your requirements and preferences. On the programme, you’ll have a health coach supporting you and can help you adapt any recipes to ensure these foods can be incorporated. To find out more, take our health quiz here

Jane Mitchell-Barnes

2 February, 2021

Hi Carleen, I am a second nature customer. The SN approach to healthy eating includes good fats, good sources of fibre and healthier fruits. It is lower carb rather than very low carb, which is one of the things I really like about it. So the carbs come from wholemeal bread & pasta, brown rice, oats and other complex carbs. One of my favourite breakfasts is overnight oats which includes oats (obvs) and can include ground flaxseed and fruit. I think this approach would really suit your needs. The free trial should give you a chance to check out the approach and food choices.

Dean

9 January, 2021

Hi,
Thank you for your email. I really am interested in trying second nature but I have a couple of things I would like to address. Firstly I have just had hernia surgery so if your program involves physical activity would it be a waste for me to start now as I have a 6 week recovery period. Secondly I do find you and other companies like noom quite expensive but your success rate is fantastic! So I wouldn’t mind paying the money if I knew it will work, but what I am finding difficult to understand is what it is that you actually provide other than support? Is there any substance?

Hope that makes sense!
Many thanks
Dean

Is it really 300 British pounds per month?? I like the approach, but that is hugely expensive! Maybe I read it wrong? I have done weight watchers jfor 18 months some years ago and found it really helpful, weight stayed off for a couple years. But at 74 years, my body needs attention as well as the “inputs”. But 300 pounds per month??

I am a “young” active and fairly fit 71 year old, however lock down has done me no favours! Although I try and keep active, walking, cycling, tennis and gardening, doing my 10,000 steps a day, I am not losing weight or any fat! The problem is getting through another day deserves a treat, chocolate, ice cream or wine, sometimes all 3!! I’m not really good at online things so I am reluctant to sign up although it is appealing. I never got to grips with weight watchers, too complicated. Slimming World worked for me first time and I reached target and stayed on it for over a year. I’ve tried it since but never found the right class and the leader had to be really motivational for me to stick at it, so have failed subsequently. Not sure what to do next and am getting quite depressed looking at my increasing layers of fat!

Can totally agree with the article. I have also tried for years to lose weight and maintain the new me. I love Second Nature’s approach. So well rounded and the mind wants to do well and the body follows. Love the connection of inspiring people who connect back to me. Have and will recommend this to anyone who will listen. Love the exercise and the mindset improvement. Thankyou

6 March, 2021

Hi Jean
Still moving up and down the scale – last year was a good year and I lost 35lbs. Gains a few over Christmas, now in a limbo, seem to be maintaining at 30lb loss. Need something to keep my interest but in these times cost can be the hurdle you cant justify even against your health.

Ann Turner

Still a bit concerned as I am allergic to sugars/sweeteners so cannot eat fruit or beet veg… too much carb is bad for me too and wheat isn’t great… I think I’d feel better if I could see an example of the meals. I have breakfast of porridge, linseed, sunflower seeds mixed with aN unflavoured soy protein shake Which is the best meal of my day. I’m not vegan nor vegetarian but prefer chicken and fish….

Tamara Willner

27 November, 2019

Hi Ann, thanks for your response! When you join the Second Nature you are allocated a registered nutritionist or dietitian health coach, who can tailor the nutrition recommendations to suit any dietary preferences and allergies. Our nutritionists have devised hundreds of simple, satisfying recipes, which you can see examples of in our diet plan guide. Once you complete our health quiz, you are also sent an example 5-day meal plan.

I have only followed the 5 day free trial of Second Nature so far and am very happy to say that I feel brilliant on it. I have lost an amazing 6lbs and am eating delicious foods without any hunger pangs. I have had the occasional urge for chocolate but the fact that I feel less bloated and more energised without it has helped me stay on track.

Rachel

12 October, 2019

I’m considering ourpath. I need to wait until finances are a little easier, but also acknowledge that I’m making decisions about where to put my money and perhaps need to re-prioritise my health over other spending. I went to a local WW group and hated it as I could see that hearts and minds had not been changed at all. It seemed a room full of excuse-makers rather than people wanting to change their lives. However, every group will be a little different… This was just one group.

Julie Hilton

21 September, 2019

I have done both SW and WW. I lost 26lb in 18 months with SW but put it all back on because I started eating white bread/flour products again which are addictive to me. I was bored with the SW diet so switched to WW I tracked and stuck to my blue dots every day, I even did the couch to 5k I lost only 9lb in a year and felt cheated. I found the WW app very good, SW not so much. I enjoyed the meetings at both of the clubs. I have great hopes with Second Nature and am extremely motivated, I do have strong willpower but it only takes an upset to knock me off track.

Mary Murphy

21 September, 2019

I am thinking Second Nature would be a grest help for me.

Joan

21 September, 2019

Hi, I like the sound of this plan, but none of them really deal with the real issue – emotional eating. And I would venture to guess that a high percentage of people do that. I have a BSc in nutrition and know HOW to eat, it’s the emotional part that gets me. I eat due to stress and find myself throwing any plan out the window. I understand it’s all about change, but until someone addresses the underlying cause of over-eating, I don’t feel confident that any will help me.

Tamara Willner

23 September, 2019

Hi Joan, thank you for raising a very important point. The Second Nature programme aims to tackle weight loss from all angles, including mindset (motivation, mindfulness and habit change). By using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to develop the programme, we ensure that you feel supported and confident in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Many people on the programme also benefit from the support of their qualified health coach and online group with other users if they are feeling overwhelmed or distressed. To find out more, take our health quiz here.

Cathy Hill

15 September, 2019

Very interested in your plan, currently feel due to taking medication losing weight seems to be impossible. I have tried both SW and WW in the past but always put the weight back on. Using Fitbit which shows a resting heart rate on 56 do you think it is possible on your scheme to help me loose weight.
I feel that from the years of yoyo dieting I know lots about losing weight but really know nothing.
I have had had cancer of the womb which I’m sure is down to to being obese. At 57 is it too late to feel healthy again and have the energy to be motivated to exercise?

Tamara Willner

17 September, 2019

Hi Cathy, thank you for your response. I am sorry to hear about the various challenges you have faced. It is never too late to start making healthy lifestyle changes. The Second Nature programme focusses on helping you build healthy habits and tackling weight loss from all angles, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and mindset. Our daily articles provide you with some education around all these topics to ensure that the changes you make are sustainable and long term. In addition, you get support from your personal health coach as well as an online group. To find out more, take our health quiz here.

Second Nature looks really interesting to me. I am just 60 and am heavier than I have ever been. I’ve tried WW and SW but I am not having much success. I have joint issues with my knee and ankle which makes exercising difficult, but I know that my weight is making these issues worse, so it’s a vicious circle. I just want to feel better and healthier again.

Tamara Willner

16 September, 2019

Hi Joan. Thank you so much for your comment. I am sorry to hear that you have struggled to lose weight in the past. With Second Nature, your dedicated health coach can provide you with personalised support and guidance on the best exercises that account for any issues or injuries. We focus on helping you to make long-term healthy lifestyle changes, rather than quick fixes or fad diets. To find out more, take our health quiz here.

I only need a three months plan. I have lost three stone and I am still 19stone. My goal has always been 17 stone. I was going to slimming world and stopped because I was also and still am going to diabetes group and slimming world was not for me.

Tamara Willner

12 September, 2019

Hi Ian, thanks for your response! It’s great to hear you are moving towards your goal. Second Nature is certainly suitable for those living with type 2 diabetes. To date, we have helped numerous Second Nature members living with type 2 diabetes improve their blood sugar control. Our nutrition guidelines adopt a lower-carbohydrate approach. We do recommend that you check in with your GP or practice nurse throughout the programme in case medications need to be adjusted. Take our health quiz to find out more.

How could this be incorporated

Hi Abi, thank you for raising an important point. You can certainly still join the Second Nature programme. When you join, you are assigned to one of our qualified health coaches, who are registered dietitians and nutritionists. They will be your mentor and can tailor the programme to suit your dietary requirements and intolerances. Take our health quiz to find out more.

having read the above….i have three comments to make…..
1. refer a friend on SW….you can…….you also get a week free for yourself when the offer is running
2.include family on SW….you can easily
3. reviewer left a comment that they felt hungry on SW….this is clear that they were NOT doing it correctly, as there is NEVER a need to feel hungry on plan,
I am a SW member and have lost over 5stone, making lifestyle changes is NOT a quick fix, its for life, .

Kathryn

30 August, 2019

I have done weight watchers in the past and lost weight with the plan but as soon as you relax on the plan the weight creeps back on again! I would like to try Second Nature but I am not happy with having to pay £30 up front without being able to view the diet to see if it’s the kind of food I would enjoy, this makes me feel that either it’s rather grim or you have something to hide, if not then I would expect you to show at least a single day’s menus.

Tamara Willner

2 September, 2019

Hi Kathryn, thank you for your comment. We agree that it is important to show people what sort of food they will be eating on Second Nature, which is why we email you a free 5-day example meal plan when you complete our health quiz. We also have a free version of the app, which you can find by downloading the Second Nature app and selecting ‘Free Plan’. The free version does not include all of the features, so if you would like to try the full version we do offer a 2-week risk-free trial period where you can cancel at any point in the first 2-weeks and receive a full refund if you decide the programme isn’t right for you.

Michelle T Dyer

It’s a shame the free app isn’t available on Android.

Liz

24 August, 2019

The WW app has recipe’s as well as a link to Headspace for motivation so you need to go back and do some further research. I tried SW once, but it didn’t work as the person taking the class had her own clique of friends and if you weren’t part of that clique you were excluded. I did do WW many years ago and got to goal, but the weight did go back on again (due to clinical depression). I’ve tried the Second Nature for a week now and all I’ve felt – literally – all week is bloated and I haven’t lost so much as an ounce. Needless to say I’m not terribly impressed right now. I will say that the support is amazing and the recipes are very tasty indeed but I’m not a little despondent about it. I’ll give it another week but if, before my two week trial is up, I’m still feeling the same, then I’ll be cancelling. It’s a shame as it’s worked for a family member who recommended me to you.

Tamara Willner

2 September, 2019

Hi Liz, thank you for the feedback! The section about recipes addresses whether or not they have recipe videos in the app, which WW do not. Regarding WW being affiliated with Headspace, Second Nature also promotes mindfulness and we recommend Headspace to our members, however this is not covered in this particular guide. I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling a bit despondent about the plan right now. The first thing I would suggest is reaching out to your mentor and letting them know how you feel. They can offer support and tailor the programme (including the dietary recommendations) to suit you and provide some strategies to help with your symptoms. The other thing to bear in mind is that often it can take longer than a week to see any changes reflected on the scales. Try to think of this programme as a healthy lifestyle change journey, rather than a quick fix. I hope you’re feeling better soon manage to keep persevering!

Karen Kingston

17 August, 2019

Slimming World allows teenagers do register and they have a separate type of plan. We attend as a family and under 16 are free. There is also promotions of refer a friend.

Elle

15 August, 2019

I followed WW about 17 years ago (I didn’t pay, just took my sister’s books!) and lost 1.5-2 stone easily. I maintained my weight for 10-11 years, but due to a change of job and some personal stuff the weight has crept back on. I’m now on their new plan which I’m finding a bit more strict (chocolate is lot more points than it used to be) but the weight is coming off even if I’m outside of my points on a few days.

Jane

14 August, 2019

I see my reply, which was critical of the inaccurate way in which Weight Watchers is depicted, has been removed. This, to me, is further proof that I was correct and that “Second Nature” isn’t about actually helping people, it’s all about slamming the competition and making money for yourselves. Why else, instead of addressing critics, would you remove criticisms?

Tamara Willner

14 August, 2019

Hi Jane, thank you for your comment! Feedback is certainly welcome. We want our content to provide people with accurate information so they can make informed decisions. For that reason, we unpublish comments that make claims that are not consistent with our research until we have further explored the issue. We unpublished your previous comment while we investigate it further and accordingly adjust the content. I will email you privately to address your points in more detail and create a forum for discussion.

I am a member of Sliiming World. and in 6 weeks have lost 1st 2.5lbs. As someone who is nearly 70 and has always struggled with weight I find that pretty amazing. I have never felt hungry on the plan and the weighing and measuring are minimal. Love the meetings though am not really a fan of all girl { and apart from a couple of guys) groups. Love the awards system and the fact that I can text my consultant and get a quick response to any queries. The website is great; I can record my food intake, my weight loss, my exercise and my awards. The food optimising system isn’t rocket science and I like the fact that I can eat ‘free’ foods at any time and as much as I like. I feel this is an eating plan I will be able to follow for the rest of my life and I can easily vary meals to cater for my (tall, slim, younger) husband.
On of my main reasons for wishing to lose weight is that I was diagnosed as being in danger of developing diabetes. My health adviser has approved Slimming World as a way to lose weight and reduce blood sugar.

Caroline Stedman

10 August, 2019

I have tried slimming world which I didnt get on with, and I’m current on weight watchers.I have lost a stone and a half,I go to meetings every week and my coach is fantastic. All the group are so friendly and supportive.Weight watchers is so easy to follow, and the app is very easy to use,Its not just a diet but a way of changing what you eat, that encourages motivation too.

15 August, 2019

Hi Claire, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, we do not offer the programme for 1 month, the full core programme lasts for 3 months. I’m following Second Nature basic programme and find it inspirational. It’s giving me the insight that I’ve lacked when I’ve followed weight loss plans before. I’ve used both WW and SW successfully in the past but my problem has been finding continued motivation when the going gets tough.
Thanks to Second Nature I’m feeling full of energy, loosing weight, eating and sleeping well using the tools and techniques I’ve learnt from the app’s Toolbox. Its a great resource for the future. Thank you.
