Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, is a medication approved for type 2 diabetes and obesity treatment in the UK.

Despite Ozempic and Wegovy containing the same active ingredient, they aren’t interchangeable, which means they can’t be used at the same time.

However, if you’ve previously been prescribed Ozempic for weight loss in the UK, you can switch from Ozempic to Wegovy if approved by your prescriber.

However, it’s worth noting that if you were on Ozempic 0.5 mg or 1 mg, you’d need to drop down to Wegovy 0.25 mg to continue your treatment on semaglutide with Second Nature.

This drop in dosing is due to Wegovy’s strict treatment protocol on Second Nature.

Wegovy is approved for weight loss in the UK, and its dosing schedule starts at 0.25 mg and rises to 2.4 mg incrementally after five months.

Many people have moved to Second Nature’s Wegovy-supported programme after being on Ozempic with other providers and found that it can be challenging to drop back down to 0.25 mg after being on a higher dose.

Still, with the support and expertise of our registered nutritionists and clinicians, they were able to make this transition safely and effectively.

Do you lose more weight on Ozempic or Wegovy?

Switching from Ozempic to Wegovy will be a positive for many people looking to lose weight in the long term.

Data from randomised controlled trials shows that Wegovy generally leads to more weight loss due to the higher doses of semaglutide available.

One study found that Wegovy 2.4 mg led to an average weight loss of ~14% of body weight after 40 weeks of treatment.

In comparison, research on Ozempic 1 mg suggests it can support an average weight loss of ~6% after 40 weeks, ~8% less than Ozempic.

So, Wegovy generally leads to more weight loss than Ozempic due to the higher doses of semaglutide available.

Switching from Ozempic to Wegovy on Second Nature

Second Nature has launched a medication-supported weight-loss programme for people who need the extra help to lose weight that Mounjaro and other weight-loss injections can provide.

Generally, we’d recommend trying our weight-loss programme before applying for a weight-loss injection.

Not only is it cheaper (~£33 a month compared to ~£229), it may be more sustainable to focus on habits and behaviours without the medication.

However, if you’ve been on Ozempic or other weight-loss medications as you need the extra support and want to switch to Second Nature, our medication-supported programme offers:

  • Peace of mind that we’re the only weight-loss programme in the UK offering a medication-supported programme that’s also used by the NHS to deliver weight-loss services
  • 1-to-1 support from a registered nutritionist or dietitian
  • A guaranteed ongoing prescription for either Mounjaro or Wegovy if you’re approved after a consultation with our clinical team
