What’s the difference between Wegovy and Rybelsus?
Both are made by Novo Nordisk, and both contain semaglutide, so the drug itself is identical.
The same drug is also sold as Ozempic, a weekly injection licensed for type 2 diabetes, so you may see semaglutide under a few different brand names for different uses.
The differences between Wegovy and Rybelsus are the form the drug comes in, how often you take it, the dose, and the condition it’s licensed to treat.
Wegovy is injected under the skin once a week, at any time of day, with or without food.
Rybelsus is a tablet taken once a day, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with a small sip of water and a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking, or taking other tablets.

For anyone searching for a weight-loss medication, the licence is the key difference, because only Wegovy has been approved for weight management.
What do Wegovy and Rybelsus do to the body?
When we eat, our gut releases hormones that help regulate hunger and blood sugar. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) is one of these hormones, and it has a big role in appetite.
GLP-1 helps the pancreas release insulin to lower blood sugar, and it slows the rate at which our stomach empties, so we feel full for longer after a meal.
It also communicates with the appetite centre in the brain, the hypothalamus, to reduce hunger, food noise, and the urge to seek out food.
Wegovy and Rybelsus both mimic GLP-1, which is why they belong to a group of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists.
By quieting food noise and reducing appetite, semaglutide makes it easier to eat less of the foods that contribute to weight gain and build healthier eating habits.
How long do Wegovy and Rybelsus take to work?
Many people notice their appetite and food noise start to change within the first couple of weeks.
Semaglutide builds up gradually, taking about 4 to 5 weeks to reach a steady level in the blood, so hunger can fluctuate in the first month or two.
The dose is also increased slowly over several months to reduce side effects, so the full effect builds over time rather than arriving at once.

Do you lose more weight on Wegovy or Rybelsus?
Wegovy leads to considerably more weight loss than Rybelsus.
In the STEP UP trial, adults living with obesity who took Wegovy 7.2 mg lost an average of 20.7% of their body weight over 72 weeks, and around one in three lost at least 25%.1
The 2.4 mg dose of Wegovy produced an average weight loss of 14.9% over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial.2
Rybelsus has only been studied at its licensed doses in people living with type 2 diabetes, where weight loss is a secondary benefit rather than the goal.
In the PIONEER 4 trial, Rybelsus 14 mg reduced body weight by around 4 kg over 26 weeks, which works out at roughly 4 to 5% for many participants.4
Wegovy produces greater weight loss, partly because of the dose. Very little semaglutide survives the stomach and reaches the bloodstream when it’s swallowed, so a tablet has to start with a much higher dose to have the same effect, and the highest dose of Rybelsus is 14 mg.
The average weight loss also depends on the population studied. Rybelsus has been tested in people living with type 2 diabetes, who tend to lose less weight on GLP-1 medications than people without diabetes.
Can you get semaglutide tablets for weight loss?
Yes, but the tablet approved for weight loss is the Wegovy pill, not Rybelsus.
The Wegovy pill is oral semaglutide at a much higher dose of 25 mg a day, developed specifically for weight management. The MHRA approved it in June 2026, making it the UK’s first GLP-1 tablet for weight loss.6
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults with overweight or obesity who took the 25 mg tablet lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% on a placebo.3
These weight-loss results are similar to those achieved with the 2.4 mg injection of Wegovy and higher than those with Rybelsus, because the daily 25 mg dose is high enough to offset the low absorption with the pill.
Rybelsus at 14 mg doesn’t reach a high enough dose to achieve that level of weight loss. It’s licensed and dosed as a diabetes medication, where the aim is blood sugar control rather than weight loss.
For many people, the more useful comparison is the Wegovy injection versus the Wegovy pill, since both are licensed for weight loss. Our Wegovy pill UK guide covers the tablet in more detail.
Wegovy vs Rybelsus: which is better?
Because Wegovy and Rybelsus are licensed for different conditions, you wouldn’t usually choose between them.
If the aim is weight loss, Wegovy is the licensed and more effective option. If the aim is managing blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, Rybelsus is a reasonable tablet option, with some weight loss as a useful side effect.
For people living with both type 2 diabetes and obesity, a prescriber might consider either, alongside other medications, based on the wider picture of someone’s health.
Wegovy also isn’t the only weight-loss medication available. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is another injection licensed for weight loss, and the Wegovy pill is now an option too.
Our Wegovy vs Mounjaro guide covers that comparison.
Choosing a weight-loss medication is easier with a clinician who can look at your full picture. Second Nature has worked with the NHS since 2017, combining Wegovy and Mounjaro with structured habit support to support weight loss in the long term and prevent regain. Side effects and safety
Because Wegovy and Rybelsus contain the same drug, their side effects are very similar.
The most common side effects are gut-related, such as nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation. They tend to be worse in the first few weeks while the dose is increasing, then settle.
In the STEP 1 trial of the Wegovy injection, nausea affected around 44% of people, diarrhoea around 30%, and vomiting around 25%. Most cases were mild to moderate, and about 4% of people stopped because of side effects.2
Rybelsus shows a similar pattern of gastrointestinal side effects across its trials, consistent with it being the same drug.5
Our individual responses vary, so some people tolerate one form better than the other.
Both medications share the same rarer but more serious risks listed for the GLP-1 class, including pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, so any severe or persistent stomach pain should be checked by a doctor.5
Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 shouldn’t take semaglutide in any form. Always tell your prescriber about your full medical history and report any side effects you experience.
How much do Wegovy and Rybelsus cost in the UK?
Wegovy is available privately and through some NHS specialist weight-management services.
On a private prescription, Wegovy currently costs roughly £120-£300 per month, depending on the dose and provider. Lower starting doses tend to cost less than the maintenance pens.
If you’re prescribed Wegovy through an NHS service, you pay the standard NHS prescription charge, or nothing if you’re exempt.
Rybelsus is prescribed on the NHS for type 2 diabetes, again at the standard prescription charge.
Privately, Rybelsus typically costs between £170 and £280 per month. Because it isn’t licensed for weight loss, any private prescription for that purpose would be off-label, which a prescriber has to justify and explain.

Building habits alongside the medication
GLP-1 medications like Wegovy work by quieting food noise and lowering appetite, which gives many people the headspace to develop healthier eating and lifestyle habits.
The medication makes it easier to eat well, and the habits you build during that window will promote long-term health and help prevent weight regain in the future.
We recommend eating a diet based on whole foods that contains enough protein, fibre, fat, and complex carbohydrates, and limits ultra-processed foods.
Getting enough protein helps protect muscle while you’re losing weight. A useful guide is to aim for a portion of protein about the size of the palm of your hand at each meal.

A balanced plate is roughly half vegetables, a quarter protein, and a quarter complex carbohydrates such as wholegrain bread, brown rice, or potatoes, with a serving of healthy fat alongside.

If you stop semaglutide suddenly without having built the habits to manage hunger naturally, some weight regain is likely because appetite and food noise return.
This pattern of regain is consistent across trials that have examined stopping the medication.
Coming off slowly, by gradually reducing the dose while you maintain your healthy habits, gives you the best chance of avoiding weight regain.
Take home message
Wegovy and Rybelsus are the same drug, semaglutide, in two different forms, licensed for two different things.
Wegovy is a once-a-week injection licensed for weight loss and produced an average weight loss of 20.7% at its highest dose.
Rybelsus is a once-a-day tablet licensed only for type 2 diabetes, where it leads to more modest weight loss of around 4 kg (4-5%).
If you specifically want semaglutide in tablet form for weight loss, the licensed option is now the Wegovy pill, a separate, higher-dose oral semaglutide, rather than Rybelsus.
Their side effects are very similar because the drug is the same, and the most common are gut-related and tend to ease over the first few weeks.
Whichever form you take, semaglutide works best when combined with healthier eating habits to support all-round health and prevent weight regain in the future.
Second Nature combines medication with personalised nutrition guidance from registered dietitians and nutritionists, built around a balanced plate of vegetables, protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
The research suggests you’re more likely to avoid weight regain when the medication is paired with that kind of habit support than when it’s prescribed on its own.
Our published research found an average weight loss of 19.1% at 12 months in active subscribers on a GLP-1-supported programme, with 77.7% losing at least 10% of their body weight.7

Frequently asked questions
Are Wegovy and Rybelsus the same drug?
Yes. Both contain semaglutide and are made by Novo Nordisk. The difference is the form, the dose, and what each is licensed to treat: Wegovy is a weekly injection for weight loss, and Rybelsus is a daily tablet for type 2 diabetes.
Can you take Rybelsus for weight loss?
Rybelsus isn’t licensed for weight loss in the UK; it’s only licensed for type 2 diabetes.
It does lead to some weight loss, around 4 kg at the 14 mg dose, but far less than Wegovy. Any private prescription of Rybelsus for weight loss would be off-label.
Is there a semaglutide tablet for weight loss?
Yes. The Wegovy pill is oral semaglutide at 25 mg a day, licensed for weight loss in the UK from June 2026.
It’s a separate, higher-dose tablet to Rybelsus, and produced an average weight loss of 13.6% in trials.
Do you lose more weight on Wegovy or Rybelsus?
Wegovy. At its 7.2 mg dose, it produced an average weight loss of 20.7% in trials, compared with roughly 4 kg (4-5%) on Rybelsus 14 mg.
Wegovy achieves a higher effective dose and has been specifically tested for weight loss.
Can you switch from Rybelsus to Wegovy?
This is a decision for your prescriber, but it’s common for someone living with type 2 diabetes and obesity to move from a diabetes medication to one licensed for weight loss.
Never switch between GLP-1 medications without medical advice, as the doses aren’t directly equivalent.
Is Rybelsus available on the NHS?
Yes, but only as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. If you’re prescribed it on the NHS, you pay the standard prescription charge, or nothing if you’re exempt.
What are the side effects of Wegovy and Rybelsus?
The most common side effects of both are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation.
They’re usually mild to moderate and tend to settle after the first few weeks. Both also carry rarer risks such as pancreatitis and gallbladder problems.
Can you take Wegovy and Rybelsus together?
No. They contain the same drug, so taking both would mean doubling up on semaglutide, which raises the risk of side effects without added benefit. You should only ever take one form of semaglutide at a time.
Which is better for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy or Rybelsus?
Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes, so it’s the more relevant of the two for blood sugar control.
Wegovy is licensed for weight loss rather than diabetes, though the related medication Ozempic uses the same drug for diabetes.
A prescriber will help you make a decision based on your blood sugar, weight, and other health factors.
