What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is a daily tablet version of Wegovy, licensed for weight loss in adults living with obesity or with overweight and a weight-related health condition.
It contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the hormone GLP-1 to lower hunger and quieten food noise. Semaglutide is the same drug as the Wegovy injection.
The dose is increased gradually over several months, from 1.5 mg to 4 mg, 9 mg, and finally 25 mg, with at least a month at each dose.1
It isn’t sold under a separate brand name. It’s Wegovy, in tablet form, which is why you’ll see it called the Wegovy pill, Wegovy tablets, or oral Wegovy.
Is the tablet the same as the injection?
It’s the same drug, but a different way of taking it. The injection is given once a week, and the tablet is taken once a day.
The injection can be taken at any time, with or without food. The tablet has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating or drinking anything else.
The amount of weight loss is broadly similar to that observed with the 2.4 mg dose of the injection, which we cover below.
The injection is still available, too, in doses up to 7.2 mg, so the tablet is an additional option rather than a replacement. Our guide to the Wegovy pill versus the injection compares them in full.
Isn’t Rybelsus the tablet form of Wegovy?
No, although this is a common source of confusion because Rybelsus is also a daily semaglutide tablet.
The difference lies in the dose and what each is licensed to treat. Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes, at a maximum dose of 14 mg. The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight loss at a higher dose of 25 mg.4
So if you want semaglutide as a tablet specifically for weight loss, the Wegovy pill is the licensed option, not Rybelsus.
It helps to think of semaglutide as one drug sold under different names for different uses.

How well does the Wegovy pill work?
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking the Wegovy pill at 25 mg lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% on placebo.2
Among the people who stayed on the medication and reached the full dose, average weight loss reached 16.6%.2
These results suggest that the pill produces a weight loss similar to that of the Wegovy injection at its 2.4 mg dose, which produced an average weight loss of 14.9% over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial.3
The higher 7.2 mg injection still produces more, at an average of 20.7% over 72 weeks, so the injection reaches greater weight loss at its top dose.5

For most people choosing a tablet, the practical question is whether that difference is worth the weekly injection, which is what our Wegovy pill versus injection guide works through.
How to take the Wegovy pill
The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach to be absorbed properly because semaglutide breaks down easily in the digestive tract.
Take it first thing in the morning with a small sip of plain water, no more than 120 ml, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other tablets.1
Food, other drinks, or a shorter wait all reduce how much of the dose your body absorbs.
The 30-minute wait every morning is easier to keep up if you don’t normally eat or drink as soon as you wake.
How to get the Wegovy pill in the UK
The Wegovy pill is approved by the MHRA and is being made available through private providers first, with several taking pre-orders and waiting-list sign-ups ahead of the first prescriptions.1
It isn’t funded on the NHS yet, because NICE hasn’t reviewed it. Given that the Wegovy injection is available on the NHS, access is unlikely before 2027. Our guide to the Wegovy pill on the NHS covers the likely timeline.
Private pricing varies by provider and dose, starting at around £129 per month for lower doses.
Where to order it and what to check first are covered in our guide to buying the Wegovy pill online.
To be prescribed it privately, you’ll usually need a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition, and a clinician will check it’s appropriate for you.
Still, weight-loss medication should always be taken alongside the development of healthy habits.
Research shows that when people stop a GLP-1 medication suddenly without having built those habits, some weight regain is likely.
We treat the medication as a way to quieten food noise and reduce cravings, which buys you time to build the eating, movement, and sleep habits that help prevent future weight regain.
Second Nature has worked with the NHS since 2017, combining weight-loss medication with the structured habit support designed to make that change last. Take our 3-minute eligibility quiz, and a clinician will review your answers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the tablet form of Wegovy called?
It’s called the Wegovy pill, and you might also see it written as Wegovy tablets or oral Wegovy.
It isn’t a separate brand. It’s the same medication as the Wegovy injection, made as a daily tablet.
Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?
No. Both are daily semaglutide tablets, but the Wegovy pill is a 25 mg dose licensed for weight loss, and Rybelsus is up to 14 mg and licensed for type 2 diabetes.4
If you want a semaglutide tablet for weight loss, the Wegovy pill is the licensed one.
Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?
The tablet produced an average weight loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks, close to the 14.9% seen with the 2.4 mg injection.2,3
The higher 7.2 mg injection produces more, at 20.7%, so the injection still reaches greater weight loss at its top dose.5
Can I get the Wegovy pill on the NHS?
Not yet. It’s approved by the MHRA but isn’t funded on the NHS, because NICE hasn’t appraised it.
NHS access is unlikely before 2027, so for now it’s available privately.
How much does the Wegovy pill cost in the UK?
Private pricing varies by provider and dose, starting at around £129 per month for lower doses and rising to the 25 mg maintenance dose.
Prices will depend on the provider and any plan you choose.
Is the Wegovy pill cheaper than the injection?
Not necessarily. Private pricing for the tablet starts from around £129 a month at the lower doses, which is broadly in line with the injection rather than dramatically cheaper.
The total cost depends on the provider, the dose, and any plan you choose.
What is the strongest weight-loss pill available in the UK?
The Wegovy pill is the most effective weight-loss tablet currently licensed in the UK, with an average weight loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks.2
Orlistat is another weight-loss tablet, but it produces only about 3% weight loss. The weight-loss injections, including Mounjaro, still produce more than any tablet.
Where can I buy the Wegovy pill in the UK?
It’s available privately through online pharmacies and weight-loss programmes, with several taking pre-orders ahead of the first prescriptions.
Our guide to buying the Wegovy pill online covers where to order it and what to check first.
Why does the Wegovy pill have to be taken on an empty stomach?
Semaglutide is a peptide that is easily broken down in the digestive tract, so the tablet is poorly absorbed when food or other drinks are present in the stomach.
Taking it first thing with a small sip of water, then waiting 30 minutes, gives your body the best chance of absorbing the dose.1
Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the tablet?
It’s possible, and the tablet gives people who’d prefer to avoid weekly injections another option.
Whether it’s the right move depends on your current dose and how well you’re getting on, which our guide to switching from the Wegovy injection to the pill talks through.
What happens if I stop taking the Wegovy pill?
Appetite and food noise tend to return once the medication is stopped, and some weight regain is likely if you stop suddenly without having built habits to manage hunger naturally.
We recommend coming off any GLP-1 medication slowly by gradually reducing the dose while maintaining the eating and movement habits that help you maintain your weight.
Our free weight-regain prevention planner helps you develop a personalised plan for your goals.
Is there a tablet version of Mounjaro?
No. Tirzepatide, the drug in Mounjaro, is too large a molecule to be absorbed as a tablet, so there’s no Mounjaro pill in development.
For now, the Wegovy pill is the main weight-loss tablet licensed in the UK.
Take home message
Wegovy is now available in tablet form in the UK. The tablet is Wegovy, a once-daily 25 mg semaglutide tablet licensed for weight loss and approved by the MHRA in June 2026.
It isn’t the same as Rybelsus, which is a lower-dose semaglutide tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is a tablet licensed specifically for weight loss.
In trials, the tablet produced an average weight loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks, close to that of the 2.4 mg injection, while the 7.2 mg injection supported 20.7%. For now, the tablet is available privately rather than on the NHS.
Whichever form you take, the research suggests you’re more likely to avoid weight regain when the medication is combined with structured habit-change support than when it’s prescribed on its own.
The medication quietens food noise and lowers cravings, and the habits built during that time are what help us maintain weight loss over the long term and prevent regain.
Second Nature combines weight-loss medication with one-to-one support from registered dietitians and nutritionists, built around the balanced plate model of half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter complex carbohydrates, and a serving of fat.
Our peer-reviewed JMIR study found that members on the semaglutide-supported programme lost an average of 19.1% of their body weight at 12 months, with 77.7% achieving at least 10% weight loss.6
