How much GLP-1 medication costs per month in the UK
Across UK private providers, the three main weight-loss medications start at around £99 to £179 a month and rise to between £229 and £329 once you reach a maintenance dose.
The starting price is lower because treatment begins at the lowest dose, and many pharmacies discount the first month to attract new patients.
The figures below are typical private prices rather than a quote, and they vary from provider to provider.

How much Mounjaro costs
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a weekly injection and, at higher doses, the most expensive GLP-1 medication in the UK.
It starts at around £129- £179 per month on the lowest dose and reaches roughly £329 (or more) per month at the 15 mg dose.
The price increases with the dose. Most people move up to a higher dose over the first few months to manage side effects, so the £129 starter price is the lowest you’ll see rather than the figure to budget for.
Our guide to Mounjaro private prescriptions in the UK breaks down pricing by dose.
How much Wegovy costs
Wegovy (semaglutide) is also a weekly injection. At the highest dose of 7.2 mg, it’s usually priced slightly lower than Mounjaro, at around £300 per month compared with roughly £329+, and it starts at £99-£159 per month on the lowest dose.
As with Mounjaro, the dose is increased gradually, so the monthly cost climbs over the first few months until you find a dose you’re happy with, after which costs will stabilise. Our guide to the cost of Wegovy in the UK covers the dose-by-dose pricing.
How much the Wegovy pill costs
The Wegovy pill is a daily tablet version of semaglutide, approved by the MHRA on 11th June 2026 and now available privately in the UK.1 It costs around £99 to £149 a month to start, rising to roughly £269 a month at the highest dose.
So far, the pill is priced in much the same range as the injection rather than as a cheaper option.
Our guide to the Wegovy pill versus the injection compares the two in detail, and our Wegovy pill cost guide breaks down pricing further.
Why the first month is the cheapest
Most providers advertise a low first-month price, often £40 or £50 off, to attract new patients. That offer covers the first month only.
From month two, you pay the standard price. And because almost everyone moves up to a higher dose over the first few months to reduce nausea and other side effects, the monthly cost rises again as the dose increases.
So a headline like ‘from £129’ is accurate, but it describes the cheapest month of the first year rather than the typical one.
Still, some people will choose to remain on lower doses to keep costs down if the medication at that dose helps reduce hunger and cravings.
At Second Nature, we recommend our members stay on the lowest effective dose for as long as possible. If the dose you’re on is supporting sustainable weight loss, then there’s no clinical need to increase the dose.

The real cost of weight regain
The highest hidden cost of weight-loss medication is taking the medication without developing the healthy habits alongside it to prevent weight regain in the future.
These medications reduce appetite and quieten food noise, so we feel fuller for longer and eat less to support weight loss. This effect lasts only while you’re on the medication, so appetite returns once it stops.
In the STEP 1 trial extension, people who stopped semaglutide regained around two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year.2
If the medication is stopped suddenly and no new eating and lifestyle habits are in place to maintain the weight, it tends to return, and many people restart the medication, paying for the same weight loss a second and third time.
This risk of weight regain is why it’s important to consider the potential long-term costs of the medication and weight-loss attempts, not just the initial monthly cost.
Someone who stops and restarts every couple of years can spend more time than someone who takes the medication once, comes off it gradually, and maintains their weight loss due to the habits they built while they were on the medication.
What you’re paying for beyond the medication
Two providers can charge a similar monthly price and include different things alongside the medication, such as support from a registered nutritionist, access to an app, and medical oversight.
At a minimum, the price covers the medication, an online consultation, and a prescription from a registered prescriber.
With the injections, it should also cover needles, alcohol wipes and a sharps bin, though some pharmacies charge for these on top.
Beyond that, the difference is the level of support. A pharmacy-only service typically provides the medication and prescription, with little else.
A programme with support includes regular clinical reviews to adjust the dose, plus a registered dietitian or coach to help manage side effects, nutrition, and habits that help prevent future weight regain.
Second Nature has worked with the NHS since 2017, combining medication with structured support from registered dietitians to help keep weight off after the medication is stopped. Take our 3-minute eligibility quiz, and a clinician will review your answers.
Can you get GLP-1 medication funded on the NHS?
You can get Mounjaro or Wegovy on the NHS, but only if you meet strict criteria, and the medications are currently available only to those with the greatest clinical need.
Mounjaro is being introduced through GP surgeries in stages. The earliest group was limited to people with a BMI of 40 or above, plus at least four weight-related conditions.
From 23rd June 2026, this widened to include a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with at least four qualifying conditions.3,4
Wegovy is available through specialist NHS weight-management services for people with a BMI of 35 or above, or 32.5 or above for some ethnic groups, who also have a weight-related health problem.3
If you’re funded by the NHS, you pay only the standard prescription charge, which is around £10 per item in England and free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In practice, most people don’t yet qualify, and waiting lists for specialist services are long, which is why the majority of patients on GLP-1 medications pay privately.
Prices may lower over time as more providers and generic competition enter the market, but there’s no sign of a sharp drop in 2026. Our guides to Mounjaro on the NHS and the Wegovy pill on the NHS cover where things stand.
How to keep your costs down
Counterintuitively, the best way to keep your costs down over the long term isn’t to look for the lowest monthly price.
It’s crucial to reflect on what support you need to lose weight and keep it off over the long term.
If you opt for a provider with a low monthly fee, but don’t receive the support you need to maintain weight loss when you come off the medication, then the cost of having to make multiple weight-loss attempts in the future will be higher.
Additionally, you can also lose weight slowly and stay on the lowest effective dose for as long as possible, rather than increasing the dose by default each month.
At Second Nature, many of our members stay on the lower doses of Wegovy and Mounjaro and still reach their weight-loss goals with the support of our habit-change programme.
By developing healthier habits, such as eating a healthier diet, moving more, developing a healthier relationship with food, and sleeping better, you can support your weight-loss progress alongside the lower doses of the medication to lower hunger and food noise.
Our comparisons of the best weight-loss programmes in the UK and Second Nature compared with a pharmacy-only service set out what each price actually includes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does GLP-1 medication cost per month in the UK?
Privately, GLP-1 medication costs roughly £100-£330 (or more) per month, depending on the medication and dose.
What is the cheapest GLP-1 medication in the UK?
Wegovy and the Wegovy pill are typically cheaper, on average, than Mounjaro at all comparable doses.
Why does GLP-1 medication get more expensive after the first month?
The first month is usually discounted to attract new patients. From month two, you pay the standard price, and the cost rises again as the dose increases over the first few months.
What’s included in the monthly price?
At a minimum, the price covers the medication, an online consultation, and a prescription.
With the injections, it usually includes needles, wipes and a sharps bin, though some providers charge extra.
More expensive programmes add clinical reviews and support from a registered dietitian or coach.
Can I get Mounjaro or Wegovy on the NHS?
You can, but only if you meet the criteria. Mounjaro is being rolled out through GP surgeries in stages, currently for people with a BMI of 35 or above plus at least four weight-related conditions, and Wegovy is available through specialist services. Most people don’t yet qualify and pay privately.
Is the Wegovy pill cheaper than the injection?
The Wegovy pill isn’t cheaper than the injection at the moment. It’s priced in a similar range, from around £99 to £269 per month, depending on the dose.
How much does GLP-1 medication cost over a year?
Over a full year on a higher dose, the medication alone usually costs roughly £2,000 to £4,000, depending on the medication and provider. The first few months are cheaper while the dose is still low.
Will GLP-1 medication get cheaper in the UK?
Prices may lower over time as more providers compete and the NHS rollout widens, but there’s no sign of a sharp fall in 2026. Privately, the typical range is roughly £100 to £330 a month.
How much is Mounjaro at a pharmacy like Asda or Boots?
High-street and online pharmacies price Mounjaro in a similar range to other private providers, from around £129 for the starter dose to roughly £329 for the maintenance dose.
What differs between providers is less the price and more what comes with it, such as clinical reviews and ongoing support from a nutritionist or dietitian.
Take home message
Privately, GLP-1 medication in the UK costs somewhere between £100 and £330 a month. Where you land in that range depends mainly on the dose you end up on rather than the provider you start with.
The cheapest first-month offer is rarely the cheapest year. The cost rises as the dose goes up, and it rises again every time someone stops and restarts after the weight returns.
What keeps the total down is staying at the lowest effective dose and building the eating and lifestyle habits that hold the weight once the medication stops, so the same weight loss isn’t paid for twice.
Second Nature combines medication with support from registered dietitians and nutritionists, group coaching, and a habit-change programme built around a balanced plate of vegetables, protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats.
In a 12-month study of 339 Second Nature members published in JMIR Formative Research, members taking tirzepatide (Mounjaro) lost an average of 22.1% of their body weight, and those taking semaglutide (Wegovy) lost 17.1%, in line with the averages seen in the original clinical trials.5
