Since she was a teenager, Becky always struggled with her weight, and got into the cycle of signing up to weight loss programmes that felt unsustainable. Consequently, she developed a negative relationship with certain foods that left her feeling guilty after she had them. Since joining Second Nature, Becky no longer feels she is on a diet, and has built a much more positive mindset around food. She has achieved significant weight loss during her time on the programme, and has noticed improvements in her mood and overall energy levels.
A little bit about you
I’m Becky, I’m 31 years old and have always struggled with my weight since being a teenager. I’m married and have 2 young children. I also work part-time in a medical office based job.
“I now make healthier food choices without thinking it is a diet, and I eat foods that I enjoy in a mindful way.”
Since starting Second Nature, I’ve noticed many changes in terms of my health and wellbeing. My skin is clearer and more hydrated, I’m sleeping more, and my mental health has improved.
My energy levels and mood have improved and I no longer have negative emotions associated with certain foods. I know which exercises suit me best and I’ve seen an improvement in my fitness levels. Most importantly my mindset has shifted. I now make healthier food choices without thinking it is a diet, and I eat foods that I enjoy in a mindful way.
How would you compare Second Nature to other lifestyle change and weight loss programmes?
As previously mentioned, I’ve battled with my weight all of my adult life and for most of my teenage years, too. I always remember my mum going to weigh in classes and this was just the cycle I fell in to. I would sign up for a programme with well known companies within the diet industry. During the first couple of weeks, I would lose a decent amount of weight, and then for the following 8 or 9 weeks, my weight would go up and down. I do not think I ever managed to complete a full programme, and can almost certainly say I never finished weighing less that I started.
Second Nature does not feel like a diet. It has taught me how to cook healthy and filling foods, and to also mindfully enjoy the foods I love. I’m able to eat a healthy and balanced diet and enjoy certain foods that would have previously been associated with ‘points’ or ‘syns’, leaving me feeling negative about myself after having them. I now enjoy these foods, no longer feel guilty for eating them, and am able to carry on with my usual nutritious meals afterwards.
“This is the first time in my adult life that I have reached a healthy weight.”
I’ve just completed my initial 12 week programme with Second Nature and I don’t want it to end, so I have signed up for a 4 week follow-on course. I’ve lost a significant amount of weight and it’s staying down. This is the first time in my adult life that I have reached a healthy weight.
I’ve loved the daily articles as they explain so much about the food we eat and the way our bodies work to digest it. It makes choosing food easier as there is a scientific element behind it all. The group and the access to a health coach, who is a qualified dietitian or nutritionist has also been invaluable. Being able to ask questions to the group and receive advice and support has been a great help to me.
What advice would you give to fellow members on the programme or anyone looking to make a positive lifestyle change?
Go for it! This programme teaches you so much and equips you with the tools to overcome those hurdles. We all get disheartened when we don’t lose week on week, but the reading teaches you about the reasons behind this, such as natural weight fluctuations and the set-point theory. Also, make full use of your health coach in the main programme!
If you could give a message to the team at Second Nature, what would you like to say?
