You can be prescribed on the NHS via your GP if you’re living with type 2 diabetes as an addition to diet and exercise.

Additionally, semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic) may be prescribed as part of Tier 3 weight management services.

A Tier 3 weight management service is a specialised program designed for adults with severe and complex obesity who have been struggling to lose weight for an extended period of time. These programmes typically last 12-18 months.

How do you qualify for an Ozempic prescription?

To receive an Ozempic prescription from your GP in the UK, here are some of the criteria you need to meet:

  • Have poorly controlled type 2 diabetes
  • Treatment with metformin is considered an inappropriate
  • Have a BMI of 30 or over
  • Have no diagnosis or family history of thyroid cancer
  • Have no diagnosis or family history of pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss in the UK?

No, Ozempic is only approved for individuals living with type 2 diabetes to help manage their blood sugar levels.

However, you can purchase Ozempic online from registered and regulated clinics and pharmacies in the UK. You need a prescription to buy Ozempic, which you can complete using a simple online form.

Additionally, Second Nature has launched a medication-supported programme this year, where you can purchase an Ozempic or Wegovy prescription alongside our award-winning weight-loss programme.

Purchasing Ozempic for weight loss is considered ‘off-label’ medication use. If a medicine meets the acceptable standards of efficacy, safety, and quality – it can be prescribed for use outside of what it’s been approved for.

High-quality randomised controlled trials have shown that Ozempic (semaglutide 1 mg) can lead to a significant weight loss of up to 15%.

Ozempic also has a good safety profile, with fewer than 10% of participants stopping the treatment due to adverse events and side effects.

Therefore, healthcare professionals can prescribe Ozempic for weight loss if they feel it’s in their best interest.

Should I buy Ozempic?

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy can lead to significant weight loss and health improvements like lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

However, all medications come with risks and rewards, and not everyone is suitable for Ozempic and Wegovy.

Deciding to start a new medication is a highly personal choice. So, ultimately, it depends on whether you believe it’s the best decision for your health going forward.

Additionally, when you’re being prescribed the medication, you have to meet specific eligibility criteria.

For example, some of the criteria for Second Nature’s programme are:

  • BMI over 30
  • No previous diagnosis or family history of thyroid cancer
  • No previous diagnosis or family history of pancreatic cancer
  • No current diagnosis of an eating disorder

If you’re unsure whether to take Ozempic to support weight loss, speak to your local healthcare team.
