The pill contains semaglutide, the same medicine as the Wegovy injection. It mimics GLP-1, a hormone the gut releases after eating that reduces hunger and quietens food noise, so we feel full sooner and for longer.
Turning semaglutide into a tablet is the hard part, because stomach acid would normally break it down. Each pill includes an absorption enhancer called SNAC, which shields the semaglutide from stomach acid and helps it cross the stomach lining into the bloodstream.
It is one tablet a day, and the timing matters more than with the injection. You take it whole when you wake up on an empty stomach, with a small sip of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before any food, other drinks or other medication.
You build up gradually through four strengths to let your body adjust, starting at 1.5mg and stepping up through 4mg and 9mg to the 25mg maintenance dose. You stay at least a month at each level, so it takes around 12 weeks to reach the full dose.
If you are already on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection, you can move straight to the 25mg daily tablet without building back up.
In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking the 25mg pill lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% on a placebo. Among those who completed the full course at the top dose, the average reached 16.6%.
That puts the pill very close to the standard 2.4mg Wegovy injection, which produced 14.9% over 68 weeks in its trial.
Medication works best alongside changes to how you eat and live. Second Nature members combining a GLP-1 with our dietitian-led programme lost an average of 19.1% of their body weight at 12 months, with 77.7% losing 10% or more.
Because it is the same medicine as the Wegovy injection, the side effects are similar. Most are gut-related, such as nausea, diarrhoea and constipation, and they tend to appear as the dose increases, then settle as the body adjusts.
The pill carries the same warning as the injection about a rare type of thyroid tumour, based on animal studies, so it is not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer. A clinician always checks it is right for you before you start.
The Wegovy pill is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to 30 who also have a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
It tends to suit people who have held off on weight-loss medication because of needles, and people already on the Wegovy injection who would simply rather take a tablet. Everyone goes through a clinical eligibility check first.
The medication will lower hunger and food noise, while developing healthy habits will keep the weight off in the long run.
Your plan pairs the prescription with a registered dietitian, daily coaching in the app, and a structured approach to food, movement and sleep, all built to help you lose weight and prevent regain in the future.
Yes. The MHRA approved the Wegovy pill for weight loss in June 2026, the first oral GLP-1 tablet licensed for weight loss in the UK. It is available on private prescription, and is not yet on the NHS while NICE completes its review.
Yes, both contain semaglutide. The pill is a daily tablet and the injection is a weekly jab. The main difference is how you take it, and that the standard injection delivers slightly more weight loss in trials (14.9% versus 13.6%).
Both are oral semaglutide tablets, but they are licensed for different things. Rybelsus is licensed to treat type 2 diabetes, at doses up to 14mg. The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight loss, at a higher 25mg maintenance dose. They are not interchangeable.
In the OASIS 4 trial, people lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, rising to 16.6% among those who completed the full course at the 25mg dose.
