Wegovy is the injectable form of semaglutide, a GLP-1 medicine taken as a once-weekly injection under the skin. There is now also a Wegovy pill, the same medicine taken as a daily tablet.
It mimics GLP-1 and works through three routes: it acts on the appetite centres in the brain to lower hunger, slows the stomach so we feel fuller for longer after meals, and prompts the pancreas to release insulin to help manage blood sugar. The result is naturally eating less without battling cravings.
A once-a-week injection, taken on any day, at any time, with or without food. You start low and step up, beginning at 0.25 mg and increasing roughly every four weeks to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose, which takes around 16 weeks.
There is also a higher 7.2 mg dose, approved in January 2026, taken as the same weekly injection and built up over around 28 weeks.
Wegovy works for most people. On the 2.4 mg dose, people lost around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, and around 69% lost more than 10%. The higher 7.2 mg dose reached around 20.7% over 72 weeks. Results come fairly quickly and then level off, with most of the loss in the first 32 weeks.
Medication does much of the heavy lifting, but the habits you build alongside it are what keep the weight off.
The most common side effects are gut-related, such as nausea, diarrhoea and constipation, and are usually worst early on before easing as the body adjusts. In trials of the 2.4 mg injection, around 44% of people had nausea and 30% had diarrhoea. Building the dose up gradually keeps these as mild as possible.
Like other GLP-1 medicines, it carries a warning about a rare type of thyroid tumour, based on animal studies, so it is not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer. A clinician always checks it is right for you, and reviews your history, before you start.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, so your suitability is checked before you start. It is generally for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
Everyone goes through a clinical eligibility check first.
The injection is not meant to be forever, and stopping suddenly is where people come unstuck: in trials, people regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year of stopping. That is the gap our programme is built to close.
Our research found that 59% of people who reduced their dose slowly while building healthy habits kept their weight off six months later. Your plan wraps the injection in real change: a registered dietitian, daily coaching in the app, and a structured approach to food, movement and sleep.
Both are semaglutide, just a different format. The injection is a weekly jab you can take at any time, while the pill is a daily tablet taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait. Weight loss is broadly similar, with the injection edging it slightly.

At standard maximum doses, Mounjaro produced around 20% weight loss versus around 14% for Wegovy. Mounjaro works on two appetite hormones and Wegovy on one, and a clinician helps you decide which suits you.
